A tribunal has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment and two others to 10 years' imprisonment over charges of mutilating a seven-year-old child and forcing them into begging 16 years ago in the Kamrangirchar area under the jurisdiction of Kamrangirchar Police Station.
Today (9 April), Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict.
In addition to imprisonment, each convict was fined Tk500,000, with a further one-year term of rigorous imprisonment in case of default.
The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Salauddin, Md Shariful Islam alias Qurban Mia and Khondakar Omar Faruk.
The two convicts receiving 10-year sentences, considering their age, are Md Ramzan and Saddam.
Two other accused, Kawsar and Najma Akter, were acquitted as the allegations against them were not proven.
Among the convicts, Shariful Islam and Khondakar Omar Faruk are currently in custody.
Arrest warrants have been issued against the absconding Salauddin, Ramzan and Saddam.
The court has directed the district magistrate to recover the fines by publicly auctioning the movable and immovable properties of the convicts and to provide the proceeds to the victim's family.
Prosecutor Md Anwarul Amin Chowdhury (Harun) of the concerned tribunal confirmed the information.
According to case records, on 6 May 2010, the accused lured a seven-year-old child from their home in Kamrangirchar with the intent to permanently cripple the child and force them into begging.
The accused took the child to a secluded location, mutilated their genitalia, and inflicted severe injuries with sharp weapons and bricks on various parts of the body.
The child was later rescued in a bloodied state and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, the child's mother, Ali, filed a case at Kamrangirchar Police Station.
Following the investigation, on 15 May 2011, the investigating officer Assitant Superintendent of Police MD Abdul Baten of RAB-1, filed a chargesheet against the accused.
The court then framed charges and commenced the trial, during which the tribunal recorded the testimony of 20 witnesses.
