July Uprising murder cases to be tried under Speedy Trial Tribunal
The law ministry has formed a special committee led by the additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division to monitor and strengthen prosecution activities for the pending cases

The interim government has decided that murder cases filed over the killings during the July Uprising will be tried in Speedy Trial Tribunals.
However, cases already being heard at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will continue there, said a press release issued by the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry today (20 October).
According to the ministry, a total of 837 cases have been filed across the country in connection with killings during the July Uprising. Among them, 45 cases are currently under trial at the ICT, while police have already submitted charge sheets in 19 murder cases in various criminal courts. These cases will now be transferred to the speedy trial tribunal under section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002, for expedited proceedings.
Meanwhile, the law ministry has formed a special committee led by the additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division to monitor and strengthen prosecution activities for the pending cases.
The committee will collect a complete list of cases filed over murders and other serious offenses committed to suppress the student and public movement during the July uprising, along with the current status of each case.
It will also identify challenges in the prosecution process of charge-sheeted cases, except those under the International Crimes Tribunal, and submitting recommendations to the government to address such issues.
