A Rajshahi court placed Jubo League leader Jahirul Islam Rubel on a 5-day remand over allegations of shooting at protesters during the anti-discrimination student movement on 5 August.

Judge Faisal Tarek of Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 pronounced the verdict at 11:30am today (15 September).

Earlier, police from Boalia police station presented Jahirul before the court around 11:15am and asked for a 10-day remand.

"Rapid Action Battalion members arrested Jahirul from Cumilla's Daudkandi and brought him to Rajshahi last night (14 September). Jahirul was kept in RAB custody during the night. In the morning, members from Boalia police station received him and took him to the court," said Officer In-Charge of Boalia police station SM Masud Parvez.

Masud added that there are six cases against Jahirul, including murder, attempt to murder, looting of weapons and under Explosives Prevention Act.

"Jahirul has been shown arrested in all of these cases, but he has been granted remand only in the murder case. He will be kept at the police station and questioned," Masud added.

Contacted, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Mohammad Abu Sufian said, "There were eight cases against Jahirul before 5 August. Another six cases have been filed against him for his involvement in the events of 5 August. During the investigation, police will try to discover from where he got the weapons, who else was associated with him and how the murder of Ali Raihan was committed."

There are allegations that Jahirul has been involved in extortion, land grabbing, narcotics, gambling and terrorist activities. In 2023, he had hidden information and became a councillor candidate in the Rajshahi City Corporation elections.

In a video footage, Jahirul was seen holding two guns in his two hands and shooting at the protesters on 5 August. Two students, Ali Raihan from Rajshahi College and Sakib Anjum from Barendra University, were killed in that incident, while 50 others were injured.

Jahirul is the son of Abdur Razzak and hails from Chandipur area in Rajshahi City. He is known to be the right hand of former RCC mayor AHM KHairuzzaman Liton.
