The formal trial against notorious top-listed criminal Subrata Bain alias Md Fateh Ali and his three associates has officially begun, with a Dhaka court today (15 October) framing charges against them in an arms case filed at Hatirjheel Police Station.
Judge Fahmida Jahangir of Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal 15 rejected the discharge petitions filed by the defendants after a hearing and ordered the framing of charges. The court also scheduled 16 November for the commencement of testimony.
The three other accused in the case are Abu Rasel Masud alias Molla Masud, MAS Sharif, and Arafat Ibne Nasir. Bain and Ibne Nasir were presented before the court from the prison, while the remaining two accused, Molla Masud and MAS Sharif, joined the hearing virtually.
During the framing of charges, Subrata Bain pleaded not guilty and requested justice from the court.
The case was filed following a special operation by the Bangladesh Army on 27 May, which led to the arrest of Subrata Bain and his close associate Molla Masud in Kushtia district. Based on their information, two more associates, shooter Arafat and Sharif, were later arrested from the Hatirjheel area in Dhaka.
Authorities recovered a significant cache of weapons during the operation, including five foreign pistols, ten magazines, 53 bullets, and one satellite phone. Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman of Hatirjheel Police Station filed the arms case the following day, 28 May.
Investigating Officer Aminul Islam of the Detective Branch (DB) of police submitted the charge sheet against the accused on 13 July, after which the case was transferred to the special tribunal for trial.
Subrata Bain faces numerous previous allegations, including murder and extortion. His criminal career reportedly began in 1991 with the murder of Jasad Chhatra League leader Murad in the Agargaon area of Dhaka.
Bain was known as the head of the influential "Seven Star Group" in Dhaka's underworld and was one of 23 top terrorists for whom the home ministry announced a reward for capture in 2001. He fled to India around 2003 as law enforcement activities intensified.
