ICT prosecutors request maximum penalty, asset seizure for Hasina, plan to seek Interpol warrant afresh after verdict
Prosecutors have requested the confiscation of her properties, alongside those of the two co-accused, to compensate families of the martyrs and injured victims.
The prosecution at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has appealed for the maximum punishment for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the case accusing her of crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.
Prosecutors have also requested the confiscation of her properties, alongside those of the two co-accused, to compensate families of the martyrs and injured victims.
Speaking to reporters at the tribunal premises today (16 November), ICT Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim said, "The prosecution will file a fresh petition tomorrow, after the verdict, seeking an Interpol arrest warrant for Sheikh Hasina."
"We have sought the highest possible sentence for her," Tamim added. "Additionally, we requested that the accused persons' properties be confiscated and transferred to the families of the martyrs and the injured victims."
He further said the prosecution would accept any judgement issued by the tribunal "in the interest of justice."
The tribunal is set to deliver its verdict tomorrow (17 November), in a case that names Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun as accused.
A three-member panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mazumder, will announce the verdict. The judgement will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV).
On 17 June, the tribunal published notices in two national dailies asking Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to surrender by 24 June.
The notices were issued after the court took cognisance of the formal charge submitted on 1 June.
The prosecution informed the tribunal that Hasina and Kamal were absconding, citing intelligence reports that they were in India.
The prosecution brought five charges of crimes against humanity and mass killings against Hasina, Kamal, and Mamun, based on a probe report submitted on 12 May.
Charges were framed against the trio on 10 July.
