Husband sentenced to death for killing wife in 2017
An argument over money broke out between the couple at around 1:30pm on 6 October 2017, during which Monir allegedly slit Soma's throat with a knife
A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife by slitting her throat at their home in the capital's Middle Badda area in 2017.
The verdict was delivered today (21 July) by Judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi of the 6th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka. The court also fined the convict, Monir Hossain, Tk100,000, court's bench assistant, Md Abul Kashem, confirmed.
Monir had been out on bail during the trial. On 14 July, after hearing the closing arguments and fixing the date for the verdict, the court cancelled his bail and ordered him to be sent to jail.

He was produced before the court from prison ahead of the verdict and was sent back to jail after conviction.
According to the case statement, Monir Hossain married Shakir Khatun Soma in 2003, and the couple had a daughter. They initially lived together peacefully, but Monir and members of his family later began subjecting Soma to physical and mental abuse.
The statement added that Soma endured the abuse for the sake of their child. Monir repeatedly pressured her to provide money, claiming he needed it for business. Over the years, Soma's family gave him Tk11 lakh, while her two sisters also provided financial assistance. Despite this, he continued demanding more money and allegedly intensified the abuse.
In February 2017, Monir assaulted Soma and forced her out of their home. She moved to her mother's residence in Badda but returned a few days later after Monir promised not to mistreat her again. However, the abuse continued.
According to the case statement, an argument over money broke out between the couple at around 1:30pm on 6 October 2017. During the altercation, Monir allegedly slit Soma's throat with a knife.
Neighbours rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after hearing her screams, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that day, Soma's mother, Akhtar Banu, filed a murder case with Badda Police Station.
Following the investigation, Sub-Inspector Bayezid Bostami of Badda Police Station submitted the charge sheet on 7 December 2017.
The court framed charges against Monir on 17 May 2018 and ordered the trial to begin. During the proceedings, it recorded testimony from 15 of the 20 prosecution witnesses before delivering the verdict.
