House help gets death penalty in 2019 Dhanmondi double murder case
A total of 23 witnesses testified in the case on different hearing dates.
A Dhaka court today (17 February) convicted and sentenced house help Surovi Akhter to death in a case filed over the murder of housewife Afroza Begum and domestic worker Diti in the capital's Dhanmondi area in 2019.
Tawhida Akter, judge of the 7th Additional Sessions Court in Dhaka, delivered the verdict this afternoon.
In the same case, another accused, Bacchu Mia, an employee of the house, was acquitted as the charges against him could not be proven.
Police produced the two accused, who were in custody, before the court during the pronouncement of the verdict.
Plaintiff's lawyer Khalilur Rahman confirmed the matter.
Afroza used to live in a fourth-floor flat of an apartment named Lobelia House in Dhanmondi, while her daughter Dilruba Sultana Ruba lived on the fifth floor of the same building.
On 1 November, 2019, the throat-slit bodies of Afroza, 65, and Diti, 18, were recovered from the flat.
Dilruba filed the case on 3 November, 2019, with Dhanmondi Police Station.
Police submitted the charge sheet against Surovi and Bacchu on 1 February, 2022, and the court framed charges against the duo on 11 October the same year.
