HC writ seeks mandatory ramp law to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities
It also seeks the full and effective implementation of the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2013.
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking directives to enact a law making the installation of ramps mandatory in all government and private buildings to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Barrister Fahmida Akhter filed the public interest litigation today (20 April), sources said, adding that a hearing on the petition may take place later this week.
The writ was filed with a media report attached, titled "Movement for persons with disabilities in Dhaka remains largely inaccessible," highlighting ongoing barriers to mobility in the capital, Dhaka.
The respondents in the writ include the law secretary, home secretary, housing and public works secretary, and local government secretary, among others.
The petition calls for legislation requiring the installation of ramps in all public and private buildings to guarantee access for persons with disabilities, in line with constitutional and human rights protections.
It also seeks the full and effective implementation of the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2013.
