The International Crimes Tribunal-1 also issued arrest warrants against the accused and directed police to produce them before the court by 29 January.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 today (18 January) issued arrest warrants against 24 accused, including former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising in Mohammadpur of the capital.
A three-member tribunal, led by its Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order after taking the allegations into cognisance against 28 accused.
The tribunal also set 29 January for producing the absconding accused before it, while the prosecution placed three charges in the case.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam read out the charges, stating that followers of Awami League, Chhatra League, its associate bodies, and some law enforcers carried out atrocities on unarmed people in Mohammadpur during the student-led uprising on 18 and 19 July 2024.
Following the probe, the investigation agency submitted a report naming 28 individuals. After examining it, the prosecution filed the formal charges.
The chief prosecutor said that the students and general people were shot under the "provocation, incitement and direct or indirect presence" of the accused.
He said nine people, including Mahmudur Rahman Saikat and Farhan Faiyaz, were killed, while many more were injured, adding that the prosecution has sufficient documents and evidence in support of the charges, along with 50 witnesses.
The other accused include former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, former additional Deputy Inspector General Proloy Kumar Joarder, and former DMP joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker, as well as leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League.
Meanwhile, Mohammadpur Thana unit Chhatra League president Naimul Hasan Russell, vice-presidents Sazzad Hossain, Omar Faruq, and Fazle Rabbi are now under trial.
