Ex-Narayanganj mayor Ivy granted bail in two murder cases
The cases were filed on 11 September 2024 and 30 June 2025.
The High Court today (30 April) granted interim bail to Selina Hayat Ivy, the former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, in two murder cases filed with Siddhirganj Police Station.
The High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order following two separate bail petitions filed by Ivy, reports Prothom Alo.
The cases were filed on 11 September 2024 and 30 June 2025. Ivy was shown arrested in these cases on 2 March and 12 April, respectively.
Ivy sought bail from the High Court after her bail was denied in lower courts.
Senior advocates Sara Hossain and Motahar Hossain Saju, assisted by SM Hridoy Rahman, moved the pleas for Ivy, while Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shajia Sharmin represented the state.
On 9 May last year, police arrested Ivy from her Deobhog residence in Narayanganj. She was later shown arrested in three murder cases and two attempted murder cases linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
On 9 November last year, the High Court granted her bail in the five cases. The state later appealed, and on 12 November the Appellate Division's chamber judge stayed the bail orders, referring the matter to a regular bench. The petitions are still pending.
According to her lawyers, on the same day she was granted bail in those five cases, she was shown arrested in five more cases where her name was not mentioned in the FIRs.
She was later granted six months' interim bail by the High Court on 26 February this year in those five cases. The state challenged the order, and on 5 March the chamber judge stayed the bail, sending the matter for regular hearing.
Following a hearing on 27 April, the Appellate Division set 3 May for the order.
Meanwhile, Ivy filed a writ challenging the legality of her "show-arrest" in two Siddhirganj cases after securing bail in 10 cases. On 26 April, the High Court issued a rule asking why the process of showing her arrested should not be declared illegal and in violation of fundamental rights.
Selina Hayat Ivy served as the mayor of Narayanganj municipality from 2003 to 2011 before winning three consecutive elections as the mayor of the Narayanganj City Corporation.
