Ex-army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan to testify against Ziaul Ahsan
Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, former chief of army staff general (retd), is set to testify today (8 February) in a case against former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre Ziaul Ahsan over his alleged involvement in enforced disappearances and killings.
Confirming the matter, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the former army chief appeared before the tribunal to testify as a prosecution witness in the case.
On 14 January, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 framed three specific charges against Ziaul Ahsan.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order, scrapping a discharge petition filed by the accused. The tribunal also set today for the prosecution to place its opening statement.
Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam pleaded for framing the charges, while senior advocate Mansurul Haque Chowdhury moved the discharge petition.
Earlier on 17 December 2025, the prosecution submitted the formal charge, bringing three specific counts against Ziaul Ahsan.
Ziaul Ahsan is currently in custody and facing trial in several cases involving allegations of abduction, torture, enforced disappearance, killings, and other crimes against humanity.
