Court summons RMP commissioner over murder accused’s media remarks

A Rajshahi court has summoned Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian to appear in person and explain why action should not be taken against him for allowing an accused to make statements to the media while in police custody.
A court order issued today (15 November) said media reports had shown that accused Limon Mia gave statements to print and electronic outlets while in police custody, in which he blamed the victim in the case of the murder of the son and the attempted murder of the wife of Metropolitan Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman.
Mentioning the case of Ayesha Siddiqa Minni VS state (39 BLD 470), the order stated that the High Court had earlier issued directives to the authorities concerned not to speak to media about the updates of cases under investigation citing human rights issues among others.
The order directed the RMP commissioner to appear before the court on the next scheduled date and show cause why legal action should not be taken against him for providing the accused with an opportunity to speak to the media.
According to the case details, Limon Mia, carrying a sharp knife, entered the judge's rented flat on the fifth floor of a 10-storey building in the Terkhadia area of Rajshahi on Thursday (13 November).
He is accused of stabbing and strangling the judge's 17-year-old son, Tausif Rahman Sumon, causing his death, and of seriously injuring the judge's wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, by stabbing her with the intent to kill.
Police arrested Limon Mia at the scene and admitted him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
