Court rejects petition to sue Asif Mahmud, 41 others over police killings
The complainant alleged that on the final day of the July Uprising, at around 5:30pm on 5 August 2024, a group under the leadership of Asif Mahmud attacked the Jatrabari Police Station
A Dhaka court yesterday (12 March) rejected a petition seeking to file a case against Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP), and 41 others over the alleged killing of 12 police officers at Jatrabari Police Station during the July Uprising.
Jalal Hossain, the younger brother of Jatrabari Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hossain, filed the petition with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rounak Jahan Taki.
After recording the statement of the complainant, the court dismissed the application and declined to take it into cognisance, according to court sources.
The petition had sought to name several prominent figures as accused, including Member of Parliament Abdul Hannan Masud, Abu Baker Majumder, Rifat Rashid, Hasib Al Islam, and Nusrat Tabassum.
The list also included numerous student leaders from various educational institutions, such as Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, and Rajshahi University.
In his complaint, Jalal alleged that on the final day of the July Uprising, at around 5:30pm on 5 August 2024, a group under the leadership of Asif Mahmud attacked the Jatrabari Police Station.
The petition claimed that the attackers torched at least seven to eight vehicles, looted property, and took control of the station.
It further alleged that the attackers set fire to important government documents and, with the assistance of Asif Mahmud and his associates, hacked 12 police officers, including OC Abul Hossain, to death.
The Business Standard's efforts to reach the complainant for comment were unsuccessful as the phone number provided by Jalal was found to be out of service.
