He abused his power and acquired assets worth Tk73.19 crore, beyond known sources of income.
A Dhaka court today (20 April) ordered the blocking of debit transactions on six credit cards held at Madhumati Bank PLC in the names of former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and his wife, Afrin Taposh, over allegations of corruption.
Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order following two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Md Riaz Hossain, the bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the matter.
ACC Assistant Director and Investigating Officer Md Ferdous Rahman filed the petitions on behalf of the commission.
According to the petitions against Taposh, during his tenure as a member of parliament and mayor, he abused his power and acquired assets worth Tk73.19 crore, beyond known sources of income.
The petition also states that suspicious transactions involving Tk539.16 crore and $517,527 were conducted through 27 bank accounts in his name.
The petition noted that an investigating officer has been appointed and it is essential to block the debit activities of his credit cards to prevent him from withdrawing funds.
In the other petition, it was alleged that Afrin Taposh, in collusion with her husband, acquired assets worth Tk6.40 crore inconsistent with their known income.
The petition further mentioned that a case was filed regarding suspicious transactions of Tk70.89 crore and $395,963 through nine bank accounts.
The ACC said blocking the debit functions of credit cards in her name is necessary to prevent withdrawal of funds.
