A Dhaka court today (19 February) ordered to freeze 20 bank accounts of former state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid and his wife Seema Hamid.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order based on a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The investigative officer of the case mentioned in the plea that there was a total of Tk2.11 crore in those bank accounts.

The ACC's plea said it filed a case at the integrated district office, Dhaka-1 as the accused had illegally earned Tk6.98 crore, which is inconsistent with their income sources and depositing of Tk12.78 crore in 20 bank accounts and transaction of Tk11.18 crore illegally or in a dubious and abnormal way or to cover up the illegal sources of the income.

The plea sought freezing of movable properties of the accused saying that the probe came to know that the accused tried to withdraw money during the investigation.

If no measure is taken against those illegally earned money, there are possibilities of losing the money. So, it is necessary to freeze those illegally earned money to avoid any transaction or withdrawal as per the Clause- 14 of Money Laundering Act.
