Court bans travel of additional SP Zakaria Rahman amid ACC probe into PSC question leak, money laundering
Zakaria Rahman is alleged to have links to a PSC question leak syndicate through Syed Abed Ali (Jibon), a government employee and retired PSC driver
A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Additional Superintendent of Police Md Zakaria Rahman (Jiku) as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigates allegations of his involvement in a Public Service Commission (PSC) question leak syndicate, possession of wealth beyond known sources of income, and money laundering.
The order was issued today (4 January) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Fayez following an application filed by the ACC. Court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the ACC launched a formal inquiry against Zakaria Rahman, a member of the 30th BCS (Police) cadre currently serving as an additional superintendent of police. ACC Director General Akhter Hossain confirmed the initiation of the probe to The Business Standard.
According to ACC sources, Zakaria Rahman is alleged to have links to a PSC question leak syndicate through Syed Abed Ali (Jibon), a government employee and retired PSC driver. The allegations also include acquiring illegal assets and laundering money through suspicious financial transactions connected to the network.
In its application seeking the travel ban, the ACC stated that following the filing of a case against Syed Abed Ali over the acquisition of assets inconsistent with known income, investigators uncovered "abnormal and suspicious banking transactions" involving several individuals, including Zakaria Rahman.
The application further noted that "reliable sources indicate that Zakaria Rahman, a government official, is involved with an organised question leak ring and is attempting to flee the country," adding that restricting his foreign travel was essential for ensuring a proper investigation until its completion.
As part of the inquiry, the ACC had earlier summoned Zakaria Rahman to appear before the commission at 10am today (4 January) for interrogation, but he failed to comply.
The investigation is being conducted by ACC Assistant Director Al-Amin under the supervision of Director Md Kamruzzaman.
