Child rape case in Meherpur settled in 29 working days; one to die

A Meherpur court today (24 May) sentenced a man to death for raping a 9-year-old girl in Gangni upazila of the district in 2025.

The case was settled in just 29 working days.
Public Prosecutor of the court Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin confirmed the matter.
According to prosecution, on June 16, 2025, when a 4th grade girl from Chandpur village in Gangni upazila was bringing food to her father in the field next to her house, rapist Shakil Hossain, 24, threatened the child and took her to a jute field and raped her.
Later, when the girl returned home and informed her family about the rape, her father filed a rape case with Gangni Police Station.
After the case was filed, police arrested the rapist and sent him to jail. Eleven witnesses testified in the case in person and virtually through video calls. Based on the evidence, the court sentenced the rapist to death.
