Child Nandini murder: One gets death sentence, two jailed for 5 years

A Lalmonirhat court today (23 August) sentenced one man to death and two others to five years in prison for the murder of seven-year-old Nandini Roy in Aditmari upazila in June.

Bidhan Chandra was sentenced to death for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code and fined Tk20,000, in default of which he will have to serve six months in simple imprisonment.

The court also sentenced Ranjit Kumar Roy and Mamata Rani to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined each Tk5,000. In default, they will have to serve an additional three months in simple imprisonment. Their sentences will run concurrently.
According to the judgment, the murder charge against Bidhan was proved beyond reasonable doubt, while the charges under the relevant sections of the Penal Code were proved against Ranjit and Mamata.
The court previously recorded the statements of 23 witnesses and, after examining the accused and hearing arguments from both sides, fixed today for delivering the verdict.
The judgment said the death sentence would require confirmation from the High Court Division in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Bidhan can also appeal against the sentence before the High Court Division within seven days.
According to police, Nandini went missing on 15 June, after leaving her home to play. Her body was recovered in a sack from a cornfield near her home the following morning.
A case was subsequently filed, and a charge sheet was submitted against the accused following the investigation.
Following the recovery of Nandini's body, an angry mob vandalised, looted and set fire to the house of Bidhan's father around noon that day. Three tin-shed houses and furniture were destroyed in the fire.
Police also said a clash broke out when a mob attempted to snatch Bidhan, who had been arrested, from police custody.
Eighteen police personnel were injured by brickbats during the clash, while six vehicles, including those belonging to the SP and DC, were vandalised.
The situation was brought under control after Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were deployed to the area.
