Chhatra League leader sent to jail after arrest at funeral of Dipu Moni's husband
He was shown arrested as a suspect in the case.
A Dhaka court has sent Al Rafi Prottoy, a leader of the banned Chhatra League's Bhairab upazila unit, to jail after his arrest over an alleged attempt to create unrest around the funeral prayer of former education minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni's late husband.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias passed the order after a hearing today (21 August), accepting a police petition.
He was shown arrested as a suspected accused in the case, confirmed defence lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam.
Earlier, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector KM Mafizur Rahman, the investigating officer, produced Prottoy in court and sought his detention in jail until the investigation is completed.
The defence lawyer sought bail for Prottoy. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Prottoy allegedly attempted to create unrest with his associates around 1:20pm yesterday in the area adjacent to Azad Mosque in Gulshan, where the funeral prayer for Dipu Moni's late husband was held.
Police said he was detained on the spot while allegedly chanting slogans in support of a banned organisation.
During preliminary investigation, police learned that Prottoy was allegedly involved in an anti-terrorism case filed with Gulshan Police Station on 7 August. The case alleges that members of the banned Chhatra League were involved in plotting against the state, planning sabotage and holding secret meetings.
