Asiya rape-murder case: HC to hear appeal challenging death sentence

The High Court today (1 July) accepted the petition challenging a lower court verdict that sentenced a man to death in Asiya rape and murder case in Magura district.
The HC bench of Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Md Sagir Hossain passed the order.
The court also stayed Tk1 lakh fine imposed on Hitu Sheikh for the crime.
Advocate Mohammad Abbas Uddin stood for the petitioner.
The rape took place on the night of 5 March this year when the victim was visiting her sister's in-laws' house in Nijnanduali village of Sadar upazila of Magura district.
She was initially admitted to Magura General Hospital and later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as her condition worsened.
She was then moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and later to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka where she died on 13 March.
The brutal incident sparked protests across the country.
Police arrested the victim's brother-in-law Sajib Sheikh, 20, his brother Ratul Sheikh, 25, and their parents Hitu Sheikh, 50 and Jabeda Begum, 40 in connection with the incident.
Prime accused Hitu Sheikh was charged with rape and murder and he made a confessional statement before the court.
On 17 May, the Magura court sentenced Hitu Sheikh to death and acquitted three people in the case.
On 25 June, Hitu filed a petition challenging the verdict.
