A case was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today (21 August) accusing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 76 others of committing crimes against humanity and conducting genocide during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram in July.

The complaint was filed with the ICT's investigation agency in the capital's Dhanmondi, Supreme Court Lawyer Mohammad Hujjatul Islam Khan confirmed to The Business Standard.

The lawyer submitted the complaint on behalf of Md Zakir Hossain, the father of Faisal Ahmed Shanto, who was killed during the protest in Chattogram's Muradpur on 16 July.

Among the other accused include former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Chhatra League Central President Saddam Hossain, Chattogram City Awami League President Mahatab Uddin Ahmed and former mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury.

Additionally, the complaint mentions 1,000-1,200 unidentified people as accused.

According to the complaint, under the directives and plans of Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan, Obaidul Quader, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, former mayor AJM Nasir, current mayor Rezaul Karim, and 16 other central leaders of Chhatra League, other accused individuals carried out indiscriminate shooting with firearms, resulting in the killing of unarmed civilians.

The objective was to partially or entirely exterminate those involved in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, constituting genocide and crimes against humanity.

Earlier, four other genocide cases against Sheikh Hasina and others related were filed in Dhaka, and the tribunal began investigating those.
