Anomaly in land allocation: Case against Mirza Abbas to continue

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has rejected a petition of BNP leader and former housing and public works minister Mirza Abbas in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of irregularities in allocating a plot in the Tejgaon industrial area of the capital.
An Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Monday.
In the court, lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan represented the state, while no lawyer was there on the side of Mirza Abbas.

"No lawyer represented Mirza Abbas in the court, which is why the court dismissed the petition of the defendant. Now, there is no bar to run the case in the trail court," KhurshidAlam Khan told media.
Court sources said, seeking the cancellation of the case, Mirza Abbas filed a petition with the High Court in July 2008 but the court cancelled his pleaon 30 March 2016.
Later, he filed the same petition with the Supreme Court.
According to case details, Mirza Abbas allotted a 19.44-katha land to an entity named Pacific Chemicals when he was the housing and public works minister in 2006.
The anti-corruption watchdog later found irregularities with the allocation process of the land in which Abbas, the then BNP lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi, and a government official named Mahfujul Islam were involved.
The ACC filed a case with the Shahbagh police station in this matter on 15 July 2007.
