9 sent to jail over attack, arson at The Daily Star office
In a separate case filed over the attack on the Prothom Alo office, the court also sent two more individuals to jail
A Dhaka court today (23 December) sent nine people to jail in connection with the attack, arson, and looting at the office of The Daily Star in the capital's Karwan Bazar area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order following a hearing, state prosecutors Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman and Md Qaiyum Hossain Nayan confirmed the matter to media.
The accused are Mohammad Mainul Islam, 22, from Rajshahi, Julfikar Ali Sourav, 22, from Dhaka, Md Almas Ali, 29, from Mymensingh, Jubayer Hossain, 21, from Noakhali, Ainul Haque Kashemi, 30, from Sylhet, Abdul Rahman Palash, 30, from Noakhali, Md Jannatul Naim, 21, from Rangpur, Qari Muazbin Abdur Rahman, 34, from Shariatpur, and Md Faisal Ahmed, 24, from Chandpur.
Earlier, the investigation officer in the case, Tejgaon Police Station Inspector Md Ashik Iqbal, produced the accused before the court and sought their detention.
In a separate case filed over the attack on the Prothom Alo office in Karwan Bazar the same night, the same court also sent two more individuals, Yasin, 39 and Md Hashem, 24, to jail after rejecting their bail petitions.
According to the case statement, a group of attackers armed with sticks and inflammable materials entered The Daily Star building around 12:35am on 19 December while chanting provocative slogans.
The attackers assaulted staff members, looted cash and equipment, set fire to multiple floors of the building, and vandalised critical infrastructure, including fire safety systems and CCTV cameras.
The case was filed last night (22 December) at Tejgaon Police Station by The Daily Star's Head of Operations Mizanur Rahman, as the plaintiff.
Earlier on the same day, another case was filed at Tejgaon Police Station against 400 to 500 unidentified people under the Anti-Terrorism Act regarding the arson attack and vandalism at the Prothom Alo office.
