5 including defence secretary exempted from contempt of court charge

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today exempted five persons, including Secretary of the defence ministry Dr MD Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, from contempt of court charges after unconditional apology.

Kamal, also former director general of the Directorate of Primary Education, and four other officials of the directorate offered unconditional apology to the court for not complying with its directive to appoint a qualified candidate to the post of a primary school teacher.

The four officials are - Deputy Director Ramzan Ali, Gaibandha District Primary Education Officer Aminul Islam, Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Primary Education Officer Abdus Salam and Assistant Primary Education Officer of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Masumul Islam.

The Appellate Division summoned them on 7 December over the issue, reports Somoy News.

Beauty Begum of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila became first in the government primary school recruitment examination in 2008.

But the Directorate of Primary Education appointed Nazma Sultana, who stood second in the examination.

Beauty later filed a case with the Gaibandha Assistant Judge's Court for not getting the appointment.

Following the hearing of the case, the court directed the Directorate of Primary Education to appoint Beauty Begum, and the order was upheld by the District Judge's Court and the High Court.

After hearing the appeal against this, the Supreme Court gave the directive to appoint Beauty Begum within 15 days on 3 August, 2017.

But still, Beauty Begum was not appointed, which prompted her to bring contempt of court charges against the officers.
