A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to death for the murder of a woman and her daughter in the capital's Kadamtali area 15 years ago.
Judge Nargis Islam of the Dhaka Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court today (20 July) delivered the verdict in the case filed over the killings of Mosammat Yasmin Alam and her daughter Irina Alam Tanha.
Each of the death-row convicts -- Md Al Amin, Md Miraj Molla, and Nur Alam -- was also fined Tk20,000.
Among them, Al Amin and Miraj were produced before the court from prison during the verdict. Afterwards, they were sent back to jail with the sentencing warrant.
Nur Alam remains absconding, and the court issued arrest and sentencing warrants against him.
Confirming the developments, Public Prosecutor Mohammad Waliul Islam Tushar expressed satisfaction on behalf of the state.
According to the case documents, on 8 May 2010, Yasmin and Irina were strangled while their hands and legs were tied as part of a premeditated plan driven by family disputes. The former wife of Yasmin's husband and others aided in carrying out the murders.
Following the incident, Yasmin's brother Monir Hossain filed a murder case at Kadamtali Police Station.
After the investigation, Inspector Sheikh Mahbubur Rahman of the police submitted a charge sheet against the three accused on 31 August 2010.
Charges were framed against the three on 8 January 2022, and after recording testimonies from 15 witnesses, the court pronounced its verdict.
