A Dhaka court today (16 May) sent three people, including a Chinese national, to jail in a case filed over online gambling, cyber fraud and allegedly laundering crores of taka to China.
The order was passed by Metropolitan Magistrate Raunak Jahan Taki after a hearing.
The accused are Chang Tiantian, 29, Md Kawsar Hossain, 24, and Md Abdul Karim, 28.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Rezaul Karim of the prosecution confirmed the matter.
Meanwhile, the court also granted a fresh two-day remand for five other Chinese nationals – MA Ji, 33, Zhang Jiahao, 22, Lio Jinji, 32, Wang Shibo, 24, and James Zhu, 43.
After the initial remand period ended, investigation officer Sub-Inspector Md Rashedul Islam of the Detective Branch Cyber Team (South) sought a further three-day remand for the five accused, though the court approved a two-day extension.
Earlier on Thursday (14 May), the same court had placed the eight accused on a two-day remand in the case, while another suspect, Rokn Uddin, was ordered to be questioned at the jail gate.
According to police, the suspects were arrested during raids in the Uttara and Turag areas of Dhaka on 13 May.
During the operation, law enforcement officials seized multiple GSM/GPRS SIM module machines, including 64-port, 8-port and 256-port devices, around 280 SIM cards, several laptops, 20 smartphones, nearly Tk6.05 lakh in cash, passports, national identity cards and a Toyota microbus.
Investigators found that the accused promoted illegal gambling through Facebook, YouTube, Telegram groups and fake websites, attracting users with deposit bonuses and promises of quick profits.
Transactions were reportedly carried out through mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad.
Based on intelligence information, DB police first conducted raids in Uttara Sector 13 before later arresting the Chinese nationals from the Rupayan Housing Estate area in Turag.
Later, Ramna Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Subrata Das of the DB Cyber Team filed a case.
