Court bars retired DIG Sheikh Nazmul Alam from leaving Bangladesh amid ACC investigation
A Dhaka court has barred retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sheikh Nazmul Alam from travelling abroad amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption and illegal asset accumulation.
The order was issued today by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz following an application from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed Md Riaz Hossain, bench assistant of the concerned court.
Assistant Director Monir Mia, representing the ACC, filed the application seeking the travel restriction. It stated that a crucial inquiry is underway into various allegations against Sheikh Nazmul Alam, including corruption and acquisition of illegal assets.
"The accused is reportedly attempting to leave the country. For the sake of a fair and proper investigation, it is necessary to restrict his overseas travel," the application added.
Sheikh Nazmul Alam's retirement was formally announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs in a notification issued on 13 August 2024.
