Sheikh Hasina concealed information in 2008 election affidavit: ACC chairman in Sylhet
The ACC chairman said Hasina showed 5.2 acres of agricultural property in her 2008 election affidavit, while ACC inquiry traced 29 acres
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina concealed information in the affidavit she submitted to the Election Commission ahead of the 2008 polls, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen said today (23 November).
"Sheikh Hasina listed 5.2 acres of agricultural property in her 2008 election affidavit, while ACC inquiries identified 29 acres," he said while responding to questions from journalists after laying the foundation stone of the ACC's divisional office building in Alampur, Dakshin Surma, Sylhet.
The ACC chairman added that although the anti-graft watchdog worked on the matter, it could not carry out actions related to cancellation of the nomination.
"There was no pressure on the commission regarding its work, although it faced various limitations," he said.
"Honest individuals must be elected regardless of their political affiliation; the key question is whether a candidate is honest, not which party they belong to," he added.
Abdul Momen warned that accepting individuals who might be accused in ACC cases could result in consequences similar to those of previous years.
"Candidates are required to disclose their domestic and foreign income in their affidavits," he said, urging the media to identify any concealment and present it to the public.
He added that the ACC is not a judicial body; its responsibility is to place case evidence before the court, while the court conducts the trial.
He later joined a public hearing organised by the ACC in Sylhet.
