Police official withdrawn for trying to ‘bribe’ a judge

A police sub-inspector, Raja Mia has been withdrawn allegedly for trying to bribe a judicial magistrate in Zakiganj of Sylhet.

The district superintendent of police closed him to Sylhet Police Lines yesterday after receiving complaints against him of trying to bribe Anwar Hossain Sagar, a judge at the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in Zakiganj, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Lutfar Rahman.

According to sources in the court and lawyers, Raja Mia had filed a charge sheet dropping the name of an accused in a case.

The hearing on the case was scheduled for Tuesday in the presence of the plaintiff and the investigating officer.

Before the hearing began, Raja Mia entered the Judge's room at the court without permission and offered him bribe.

The judge then ordered detention of Raja Mia in front of lawyers. He was held at the court until 8:00pm.

Later, Zakiganj Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Sudipta Roy and Zakiganj Police Officer-in-Charge Mir Abdun Nasser appeared in court and got Raja Mia released, promising to take departmental actions against him.

The next day, the SI was withdrawn from Zakiganj Police Station.

Sudipta Roy said, "Raja Mia had been instructed to return to the police line."
