NBR officials demanded bribes for data requests: CPD researcher
In a survey released today, CPD has revealed that 72% of the businesses surveyed believe tax officials are widely corrupt
A researcher from the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has alleged that officials at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) demanded bribes when he went to the office to collect data and information for research purposes.
Researcher Tamim Ahmed made the allegation while speaking at a dialogue organised by CPD in Dhaka's Gulshan today (26 August).
In a survey, released during the dialogue, CPD revealed that 72% of the businesses surveyed believe tax officials are widely corrupt.
Giving an example of such corruption, Tamim said, "Unfortunately, when I went to collect data from the NBR, I too was asked for a bribe."
Supporting the claim, CPD Research Director Khondaker Golam Moazzem said that he also faced difficulties while trying to obtain data from the NBR.
Several other discussants at the event also alleged that corruption and lack of transparency remain prevalent within the NBR and the tax department.
