Consulate, foreign ministry to look into egging of Akhter in NY: CA’s press secy
New York police have detained a man said to be an Awami League activist in connection with the incident.
Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said Bangladesh's consulate and the foreign ministry will look into yesterday's (22 September) egg attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen in New York.
Speaking to journalists at a hotel in the US city last night, Shafiqul said, "This was an undesirable event. Our consulate and the foreign ministry will look into the matter."
Earlier in the day, eggs were thrown at NCP leader Akhter while he was leaving New York's JFK Airport.
In the US as part of a Bangladesh delegation for the United Nations General Assembly, at the chief adviser's invitation, NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara, as well as leaders of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, were also there.
Several eyewitnesses said the act had been carried out by leaders and activists of the Awami League, a party banned in Bangladesh.
Later, New York police reportedly detained a man identified as Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury in connection with the incident.
He is said to be an activist of the Awami League.
The NCP blamed the "mismanagement of the embassy" for the egg attack on Akhter.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters later at a hotel in New York, Akhter said Awami League activists abroad were resorting to intimidation tactics practised by them in Bangladesh.
"We are not afraid of this. The people of Bangladesh showed the highest level of courage against the Awami League and even sacrificed their lives. They will remain united and the Awami League will not be able to return," he said.
