Speakers at a programme have demanded that a list of those who played an active role in the 1952 language movement – and their state recognition – be compiled and released.

Speakers made the demand from a human chain formed in front of the National Press Club on Monday.

As the chief guest at the human chain, former ambassador Nimchandra Bhowmik said there are still anti-independence communal groups in the country. Those who failed in 1952 and 1971 are still conspiring.

He said, "The present democratic government has a strong role to play against this communal group. We believe that all members of the civil and professional society must unite to tackle this evil by building a democratic force. In order to do politics in Bangladesh, all political forces have to believe in the values of democracy and the Liberation War."

At the event, speakers said a united effort is needed to take the development of the country forward. They added that those who contributed to the country need to be evaluated and those who contributed to the language movement are the source of inspiration for the Liberation War.

Mohammad Ahmed Salauddin, Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Command Council; journalist Basudeb Dhar; Juba League central committee member Manik Lal Ghosh; Jabed Hossain, president of Muktijuddha Prajonmo Command Dhaka Metropolitan South; and General Secretary Tariqul Hasan Limon, among others, addressed the discussion.

The programme was conducted by Muktijuddha Prajonmo Command General Secretary Ashraf Ahmed.
