CMCH intern doctors go on strike

The Intern Doctors Association (IDA) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) is on an indefinite strike over allegations of assault on two intern doctors. As part of the protest, intern doctors stopped providing treatment from 12 noon on Thursday.

Earlier, a clash broke out between two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) groups at the CMCH Hostel around 2pm on Thursday. The clash took place between the followers of Deputy Minister of Education Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel and the former mayor of Chattogram City Corporation AJM Nasir Uddin. Five people were injured in the incident.

After the clash, both parties went to the Chawkbazar police station to lodge a written complaint. After filing a written complaint  the two sides clashed again on the way back  at around 11 pm in Joynagar area of Chawkbazar. Two intern doctors injured in the incident are Convener of the IDA Osman Gani and Sunny Hasnain Prantik.

Later, a case was filed at Chawkbazar police station over the attack on the two doctors. Police later arrested 11 people, said Muhammad Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Chawkbazar Police Station.

Noman Abedin, a relative of Rahim Ullah, who is undergoing treatment at the heart department of CMCH said, "About 70 patients were admitted to the ward but only one doctor was in the ward from midnight. Many patients did not receive adequate treatment, it is difficult for a doctor to care for so many patients."

Zahirul Haque Bhuiyan, in-charge of the CMCH police outpost told The Business Standard "There were two clashes since noon on Thursday. A total of seven people were injured. They are being treated in the student ward of the hospital. Additional police have been deployed to control the situation."

Tazwar Rahman Khan, member secretary of IDA said, "We are protesting to bring the culprits under the law. We will continue the protest until our demands are met."
