Several injured as DU, Dhaka College students clash at midnight
The confrontation began around midnight and quickly escalated into a chase and counter-chase between the two sides
A clash broke out late Sunday night between students of Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka College in the capital's Nilkhet and New Market areas, leaving several people, including journalists, injured.
The confrontation began around midnight and quickly escalated into a chase and counter-chase between the two sides. Witnesses said both groups hurled bricks and stones, turning the area into a scene of chaos.
According to Mohammad Jahangir, Assistant Commissioner of the New Market Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the unrest began over the setting up of shops on the footpath in front of Dhaka University's Shahnewaz Hall. The dispute led to a chase and counter-chase between students of the two institutions.
Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) Vice President Shadiq Kayem and other student leaders arrived at the scene in an effort to calm tensions. Meanwhile, a large number of police were deployed to the Nilkhet and New Market areas to bring the situation under control. The atmosphere remains tense.
Law enforcement officials later dispersed both groups, and sufficient police personnel were deployed to maintain order. Authorities said the situation is now under control.
