Chicken price goes up, hilsa turns precious

The price of chicken has gone up compared to the last week, while hilsa turns precious due to relatively shorter supply this season. 

The Business Standard on Friday visited different kitchen markets across the capital, including in Gandaria, Jurain, Hatirpool and Karwanbazar wholesale market to assess the essential commodity prices.

Broiler chicken was selling for Tk130 per kg compared to Tk120 last week. 

Several traders said the price of chicken went down during Eid-ul-Adha due to low demand caused by the abundance of red meat in most households. 

The demand for chicken is steadily increasing as the household stock of red meat is dropping, causing the price increase this week, traders said.

Meanwhile, medium sized hilsa fish were selling for Tk900-1100 and small sized ones were selling for Tk400-500 per piece. The traders said hilsa was in very short supply across markets, which made the prices shoot up as the fish became precious to customers.

Ginger imported from China was selling for Tk140 per kg, while locally grown and imports from Myanmar were selling for Tk160 per kg. It was selling for Tk160-180 last week. 

Retailers were selling locally grown onion for Tk55 per kg and imported ones for Tk50. Locally grown garlic was selling for Tk165 and imported ones for Tk160 per kg.

Vegetable prices remained unchanged this week. 

In retail markets, per kg of potato was selling for Tk20-25, green papaya, okra, pointed gourds were selling between Tk40 and Tk50. Green chilli was selling for Tk60-80 per kg.
