Chattogram police warn of scammers posing as officers
The notice stressed that no police officer will ever seek private financial information over the phone and urged anyone targeted to file a general diary without delay
Chattogram district police have issued a public alert after uncovering a rise in scams by impersonating police officers to extort money and personal information.
In a notice released today (21 September), police said several gangs are calling people from unknown numbers, introducing themselves as officers-in-charge, members of the Detective Branch, or district officials, and using threats or promises of favours to deceive victims. Some callers demand personal details by claiming to be OCs, while others pose as DB police and offer to "help" with cases or arrange special services in exchange for cash. In several cases, scammers have opened WhatsApp accounts with police photos and names to gain trust before attempting fraud.
Police urged the public to stay vigilant. They advised residents never to share personal information, bank details, OTPs, or PIN numbers over the phone and to hang up immediately if anyone requests money or special favours. Anyone receiving such calls should save the number and report it to the nearest police station or contact the district police helpline at 01320-107406.
The notice stressed that no police officer will ever seek private financial information over the phone and urged anyone targeted to file a general diary without delay.
