UP chairman arrested amid stone looting controversy in Sylhet's Companiganj

Police have arrested Md Alomgir Alom, the chairman of Purbo Islampur Union Parishad under Companiganj Upazila, amid widespread controversy surrounding the looting of stones from the popular tourist destination Sada Pathor at the upazila in Sylhet.
Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Uzair Al Mahmud Adnan said Alomgir was arrested at around 5am today (14 August).
Alomgir is the president of the Companiganj upazila unit of Jatiotabadi Krishak Dal, the farmers' wing of the BNP.
However, the exact charges leading to his arrest were not disclosed immediately.
Meanwhile, shortly after midnight on Wednesday (13 August), the district administration and law enforcement agencies launched a joint operation to recover looted stones from the Sada Pathor area.
So far, around 12,000 cubic feet of stone have been recovered from the banks of the Dholai River. The recovered stones are being returned to the river.
"A six-member team, with support from joint security forces, seized approximately 12,000 cubic feet of stone from various locations yesterday (13 August).
"The recovered stones were then redistributed across the Sada Pathor tourist site and different parts of the Dholai River," said Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Azizunnahar.
