Canadian CRO Somru BioScience acquires Novus Clinical Research to expand global network
The acquisition is aimed at creating an integrated clinical research platform linking North America and South Asia।
Canadian biotechnology company and contract research organisation (CRO) Somru BioScience Inc. today (18 June) announced the acquisition of 100% shares of Bangladesh-based Novus Clinical Research Services Limited through its local affiliate, Somru BioScience (BD) Limited.
The Prince Edward Island-headquartered firm said the acquisition is aimed at creating an integrated clinical research platform linking North America and South Asia, enabling faster development of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biosimilars, and other therapies.
By combining Somru BioScience Inc.'s capabilities in AI-driven bioanalytics, immunogenicity and biomarker analysis, and regulatory support with Novus Clinical Research Services Limited's established operations in Bangladesh, the company aims to improve the efficiency and scope of its global research services.
"This milestone is about more than expanding our footprint. It creates a meaningful connection between Canada and Bangladesh that will foster scientific collaboration, facilitate technology transfer, and attract new investment," said Mohammed Moin, Co-Founder and CEO of Somru BioScience Inc.
He added that the expanded platform is expected to draw more international research projects to Canada's Prince Edward Island while strengthening Bangladesh's role in the global clinical research ecosystem.
Rafiq Islam, co-founder and chief technology officer of Somru BioScience, said Bangladesh offers access to a diverse and clinically relevant patient population, supporting vaccine, infectious disease, biosimilar and therapeutic research.
He noted that combining Novus' local expertise with Somru's advanced analytical and regulatory capabilities would improve clinical data quality and accelerate drug development for diseases with significant unmet medical needs.
Founded in Canada, Somru BioScience has expanded from a local biotechnology start-up into an international CRO serving clients across North America, Europe and Asia. The company said the acquisition of Novus would strengthen its ability to deliver integrated research solutions across multiple regions.
Somru also plans to invest in Novus through upgrades in quality systems, laboratory modernisation, workforce development and technology transfer initiatives. The move is expected to enhance local scientific capacity and create advanced research career opportunities in Bangladesh.
The acquisition represents a foreign direct investment into Bangladesh's growing healthcare and biotechnology sector, with Somru aiming to introduce international standards in clinical research and laboratory services.
After regulatory approvals, Somru BioScience Inc.'s network will integrate Novus Clinical Research Services Limited to support clinical trials, bioequivalence studies, biomarker testing and biosimilar development across multiple markets.
The company will also present its expanded capabilities at the BIO International Convention to pursue new global biotechnology and healthcare research partnerships.
