CA invited 4 political leaders to accompany him on UN General Assembly: Press secretary
He also described this year’s UNGA session as “very important"
Four political leaders are set to join Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on his trip to the UN General Assembly at his invitation, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed today (18 September).
Speaking to reporters after an advisory council meeting at the Foreign Service Academy, Shafiqul Alam described this year's UNGA session as "very important."
He said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, party leader Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami's Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, and National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen will accompany the chief adviser.
The Bangladesh delegation is scheduled to depart Dhaka on 22 September, Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain said yesterday (17 September).
At the briefing, Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said inclusion of the political leaders in Bangladesh's delegation is a welcome step, as it provides an opportunity to showcase the national unity before the world, regardless of political differences.
"It also offers our leaders a chance to bridge gaps and build understanding while spending time together," he said.
In a world unsettled by multiple conflicts, he thinks, the forum can serve as a valuable platform for Bangladesh's political leadership to strengthen mutual understanding.
On a different note, Shafiqul Alam said the interim government has approved amendments to two Election Commission laws.
"Section 5 of the EC Secretariat Act (2009) has been revised to accelerate the commission's work. Similarly, amendments to the Election Officers (Special Provisions) Act (1991) clarify accountability and punishment for officials who neglect election duties — issues left vague in the previous law," he added.
The press secretary added that of 77 planned reforms, 24 have already been implemented while 14 others are partially in place.
