A female student of Jagannath University (JnU) died by suicide while she was reportedly on a call over the phone with her boyfriend early today (26 January) at a mess in the Kather Pool area of Old Dhaka.

Sabrina Rahman Shammi, of Chowgacha, Jashore, was a third-year student of the sociology department at JnU.

Her body was recovered at around 4:30am at the mess for female students in the Tanuganj Lane area, according to police and university officials.

Sutrapur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam confirmed the matter to The Business standard, saying Sabrina lived alone in a room at the mess and her body was found hanging from the ceiling.

JnU Proctor Prof Dr Tajammul Haque told reporters that they went to Mitford Hospital at around 5am after receiving the news of the student's death.

He said police informed them that she was on a call with her boyfriend, who is reportedly a student of BUET, when she committed suicide. Police have seized her mobile phone for investigation.

OC Saiful said Sabrina's body was kept at the hospital for an autopsy.
