Police recovered the body of a medical college student from her rented accommodation in Kushtia Sadar upazila last night (8 February).
The deceased was identified as Samia Nijhum, 20, a fourth-year student of Kushtia Medical College and daughter of Abdus Salam of Chhoto Shalikha area under Chatmohar upazila in Pabna. She had been living alone in a sublet room in a multi-storey building in the Housing E-Block area of Kushtia town for her studies.
Her body was recovered around 8:30pm from a room on the fourth floor of the building.
Confirming the incident, Kabir Hossain Matubbar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station, said police recovered the body after receiving information through the national emergency helpline 999.
According to building caretaker Riyaz Uddin, Samia's father called him in the evening after failing to reach his daughter by phone and asked him to check on her. When repeated knocks on the door went unanswered, attempts were made to open it. The matter was then reported to 999, and police arrived at the scene and broke open the door to recover the body.
Another female student of Kushtia Medical College living in the same building said Samia had rented the adjacent room at the end of January. As they had only recently become acquainted, they were unaware of any personal problems she might have been facing.
OC Kabir Hossain Matubbar said police recovered the body after being informed, and that, based on preliminary observations, the death is suspected to be a case of suicide. However, the exact cause will be determined after an autopsy.
The body has been sent to the morgue of Kushtia General Hospital for post-mortem examination, and necessary investigation procedures are underway.
