The bodies of two five-month-old twin girls were recovered from a pond near their home in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj last night (7 July).
Police have taken their parents into custody for questioning as family members allege the children were murdered.
The deceased, Lamia and Samiha, were the daughters of Sohag Sheikh, 28, and Shanta Begum, 24, residents of Bibandi village in Kukutia union.
The twins' uncle, Sakib Sheikh, said he heard screaming from Sohag's house around 8pm and rushed over.
"Shanta told me that her husband had thrown the babies into the pond. But when I entered the house, Sohag was not there," he told reporters.
"I ran to the pond behind the house and found the babies floating face down. I pulled them out and rushed them to the hospital, but it was too late," he added.
Dr Cynthia Noor, an emergency department physician at the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the children were brought in dead.
"There was water in their stomachs, indicating drowning," she said.
Sreenagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nazmul Huda Khan said, "Preliminary suspicion points toward the parents, so we've taken them into custody for interrogation. We are investigating the matter seriously. Legal procedures are underway."
