BNP leader's death during operation 'unfortunate'; camp commander, others withdrawn: ISPR
Those found guilty in the probe will face appropriate legal action under military law, says the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate
The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) has described the death of a BNP leader in Chuadanga during an operation as "unfortunate, regrettable and unacceptable," noting that the camp commander concerned and all military personnel involved have been withdrawn to the relevant cantonment.
Giving an account of the incident, ISPR said today (13 January) security forces carried out a special operation to recover illegal weapons at around 11pm yesterday in Jibannagar Upazila of Chuadanga based on specific information.
During the operation, they detained Md Shamsuzzaman Dablu, 50, from a pharmacy adjacent to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex on allegations of possession of illegal arms, ISPR added.
Based on information provided by the detainee, a patrol team searched the pharmacy and recovered one 9mm pistol, one magazine and four rounds of ammunition, according to ISPR.
It said that after the operation, he suddenly fell ill and lost consciousness.
He was immediately taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor later declared him dead at about 12:25am today, ISPR added.
Shamsuzzaman was the general secretary of the Jibannagar municipality unit of the BNP. ISPR called the undesirable, regrettable and in no way acceptable, adding that the commander of the involved camp and all participating military personnel have already been withdrawn to the cantonment.
A high-level investigation committee has been formed to determine the exact cause, ISPR mentioned in its statement, adding that those found guilty in the probe will face appropriate legal action under military law.
