BNP candidates for Ctg-2, Cumilla-10 disqualified over loan default, dual citizenship
The commission upholds the candidacy of BNP candidate Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury for Chattogram-4
The Election Commission (EC) today (18 January) cancelled the nomination of BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir for the Chattogram-2 constituency on grounds of loan default.
The decision was delivered on the final day of appeal hearings.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Nurul Amin had filed an appeal challenging the validity of Sarwar Alamgir's nomination. After reviewing the appeal, the commission upheld the objection and consequently declared the BNP candidate's nomination cancelled.
On the other hand, BNP candidate for Cumilla-10 constituency, Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan, lost his candidacy following the hearing of an appeal petition by the Election Commission.
The EC rejected his nomination on the grounds of his dual citizenship.
The decision came after Bangladesh Sangskritik Muktijote candidate Kazi Nure Alam Siddique filed an appeal challenging Gafur's validity for contesting in the constituency.
EC clears Aslam Chowdhury, Abdul Awal
Meanwhile, the commission rejected an appeal against BNP candidate Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury for the Chattogram-4 constituency. As a result, his nomination remains valid.
It also rejected the appeal against BNP candidate for Feni-3 constituency, Abdul Awal Mintoo.
Earlier, Jamaat candidate Mohammad Fakhruddin had appealed against him on the issue of dual citizenship. The Election Commission rejected his appeal and upheld the candidature.
The Election Commission as the Electoral Appeal Tribunal started hearing and disposal of the appeal petitions filed by aggrieved persons against the decisions of the returning officers over the acceptance and the cancellation of nomination papers on 10 January.
The commission is set to settle all 645 appeals by today.
