BILS demands exemplary punishment, medical treatment in Uttara domestic worker abuse case
Such barbaric acts pose a serious threat to human rights and labour rights in the country, the organisation said.
The Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) has strongly condemned the recent case of child abuse involving an 11-year-old domestic worker in Uttara, demanding exemplary punishment for those involved and proper justice for the victim and her family.
In a statement issued today (3 February), BILS Executive Director Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmmed urged all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and called upon labour and human rights organizations in Bangladesh to remain vigilant.
In response to the incident, he stated that such barbaric acts pose a serious threat to human rights and labour rights in the country.
He demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those directly and indirectly involved in the incident.
He further called for proper medical treatment for the injured child at state expense and adequate compensation for the victim's family.
The development follows the arrest of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director and CEO Md Shafiqur Rahman, his wife Bithi Akter, and two others after an 11-year-old girl was hospitalised with severe burn injuries and signs of prolonged physical abuse.
According to a case filed by the child's father with Uttara West Police Station on 2 February, the girl was allegedly tortured for months at the Uttara residence of the Biman CEO.
The father claimed his daughter had burn marks across her body and was branded with a red-hot ladle.
A Dhaka court later ordered the accused to be sent to jail, while the child remains under treatment, with doctors saying her recovery may take at least two months.
