BGMEA urges authorities to ensure due diligence in all industries
The trade body expresses its condolences over the tragic loss of lives in Mirpur fire
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) today (15 October) requested the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) and relevant authorities to ensure that due diligence is maintained across all industries to upholding the highest standards of compliance, for the greater interest of both their industries and nation's reputation.
"Particularly, we urge the government to take firm enforcement measures to ensure that no illegal facilities or warehouses operate outside regulatory oversight," said Inamul Haq khan, acting president of the BGMEA.
The BGMEA expressed deep concern over "misleading and sensationalised headlines" circulating in recent media reports, in the wake of the tragic fire incident in Mirpur, said a press release.

The apex trade body of the country's of apparel industry expressed its condolences over the tragic loss of lives, prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and for the swift recovery of those injured.
According to Fire Service and law enforcement agencies, the fire originated in a chemical warehouse. Toxic fumes and smoke from the explosion spread to nearby establishments, tragically claiming lives.
The affected facilities are not members of BGMEA, nor affiliated with any recognised industry association, nor covered under the RMG Sustainability Council (RSC).
These units are therefore not part of the formal, export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh.
