A leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was beaten allegedly by students and handed over to the police in Rajshahi yesterday (30 January).

The incident took place around 8pm yesterday near a restaurant in Malopara area of the city.

Confirming the incident today (31 January), Sub-Inspector of Boalia Police Station Shariful Islam told The Business Standard that the BCL leader, Mehedi Hasan Himu, has been shown arrested in a case filed over an attack on students during the July uprising.

"He was later sent to jail through a court today," he added.

According to students, they caught Himu while he was attending a meeting at a restaurant in Malopara. They checked his phone and found him in various Awami League WhatsApp groups. They then took him to Boalia Police Station.

They alleged that Himu is a former president of Shibganj district Chhatra League and also the joint general secretary of Chapainawabganj district Chhatra League. He, along with other party members, frequently held meetings at the restaurant, they said.

Upon receiving information, the students went to the restaurant and managed to apprehend Himu while others managed to flee.
