Missing BB deputy director found after 2 days; police say he went into hiding after gambling losses
Police say the man went into hiding after he failed to recover the money he borrowed and then gambled it away
Bangladesh Bank Deputy Director Syed Nayeem Rahman, who had been missing since 9 November, was rescued by police last night (11 November) from a residential hotel in Madaripur.
According to Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Sajjad Romon, Nayeem went missing voluntarily after borrowing money from people. He lost the money after gambling and investing in some unscrupulous WhatsApp and Telegram groups, hoping to earn high returns.
When he could not recover the money, he went into hiding, said the OC.
Nayeem was found at a hotel, named Royal Rest House, in the Puran Bazar area of Madaripur town.
His mother said they were taking him home. "We have not asked him anything yet. His mental state is not stable."
According to the Bangladesh Bank Officers' Welfare Council, Nayeem left his office after 12pm on 9 November, leaving behind his bag and identity card.
Fifty minutes later, his last known location was in the Sayedabad area, when he sent a final message to a batchmate. Later, a general diary was filed.
The content of the message led his colleagues to believe that Nayeem may have been suffering from severe financial stress.
In the message, Nayeem pleaded for help securing a job for his younger sister, concluding that this might be his "last wish".
