BASIS to name national ICT awards after Jamilur Reza Choudhury

Current and former leaders of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) have agreed to name the BASIS National ICT Awards after National Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury.

They reached the unanimity at a commemoration meeting held online on Saturday.

On the occasion, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar said Jamilur Reza Choudhury played the pioneering role in taking Bangladesh forward in information and technology.

"He was the person who inspired the government to take digital education for children forward. Besides, BASIS was established by him."

The minister also said Jamilur Reza was a man who had no wounds, no enemies. "He was out and out a patriot. His death has caused an irreparable damage to the country."

National professor, engineer, researcher, technologist and scientist Jamilur Reza Chowdhury died on April 26.

In the meeting, former BASIS leaders proposed to name the annual BASIS National ICT Awards after Jamilur Reza Choudhury. They also suggested holding a series of lectures in memory of the national professor at the BASIS Expo.

BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir agreed to the proposal and said the decision would be made at the next BASIS board meeting.

Moderated by BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir, the meeting was participated in by Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Mostafa Jabbar, former vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Professor Abdul Mubin Patuary and former director of Export Promotion Bureau Foysal Ahmed Chawdhury.

Among others, BASIS' Founder President A Towhid, BASIS Advisors Shaikh Abdul Aziz and Abdullah Kafi, former BASIS president Habibullah N Karim, Sarwar Alam, Mahbubur Rahman, and Mohammad Kaykobad also took part in the meeting.

The current leaders of the organisation also took part in the programme.
