Banned AL's 'lockdown' programme: Police set up checkposts at Aminbazar, search passengers' phones
Law enforcement agencies have been put on maximum alert ahead of the banned Awami League's programme
Police have set up checkposts at the Aminbazar entrance of Dhaka and have been conducting searches on Dhaka-bound vehicles since this morning (12 November), ahead of tomorrow's "Dhaka Lockdown" programme announced by the banned Awami League.
The operation was still ongoing as of 4:30pm.
During a visit to the spot, it was observed that policemen were stopping various vehicles, including buses, microbuses, and private cars, and questioning passengers about their destinations and points of departure. Officers were also seen checking passengers' luggage and inspecting mobile phone galleries for "suspicious" content.
Traffic in the area has slowed due to barricades placed on one side of the highway and vehicles being stopped for inspection.
Md Jewel Mia, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, told The Business Standard, "We have intensified searches at key points, including Aminbazar, around the lockdown programme announced by a banned organisation. Patrol activities have also been increased to strengthen security. Bags and other belongings are being checked to ensure no one can create any disorder."

When asked why passengers' mobile phones were being searched, the OC said, "Some people hide their identities or try to cause sabotage. We check phones, bags, or other belongings to see if there is any material related to sabotage."
However, when questioned about privacy concerns, the officer claimed, "We only check phones with the passenger's permission or when there is no objection."
However, no officers were seen seeking consent from passengers before searching their mobile phones during the operation.
